Satellite Fundamentals Certification

The SBCA Satellite Fundamentals course, formerly known as Residential Certification, is designed to provide students with an understanding of the basic knowledge and expectations they will need to successfully install and maintain a satellite system. The program is designed to assess the skills and knowledge of a satellite technician. In order to maximize the benefits of this course it should be used in conjunction with a formal training curriculum.

At the conclusion of this course students should be able to:

Understand the basics of satellite technology, distribution and installation
Have knowledge of the importance of coax cable and connectors
Troubleshoot a DBS system
Explain the importance of grounding a satellite system
(This course has been used as a basis to develop low voltage licensing requirements in Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Louisiana.)

Prerequisites:

Prior to attending the SBCA Fundamentals Course, techs should be able successfully assemble and install a satellite system and use a satellite signal meter to point and peak a dish.  In addition, techs should have knowledge of the tools and materials necessary to perform a satellite dish installation and their operation.  Techs should also have an understanding of basic safety requirements including working on ladders and working near power lines.

There are a number of resources available that will provide basic education on satellite installation.  In addition to the numerous internet sites, there is information available from manufacturers on the proper use and operation of their equipment.  Many technical colleges have also begun to offer courses in basic electronics installation and maintenance.

Training book and certification test are included in the registration fee.

* Cost:  $199
* One-day course, with the test given at the end of the day
* A score of 85% or better is needed to pass
* One free retest is available should the tech not pass.

Check back as we update the schedule regularly.
